Matthew 13:22 ~ And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
It was opening day of archery season a few years back. I had a group of bow hunters in camp and they were excited to get out hunting. We are very careful not to hunt with the wrong wind direction and spook the deer. The two hours prior to heading out to the stands we watched the wind direction every few minutes and every time we looked it changed. One of the guys that was helping me was so worried about the wind that he came to me every five minutes with another report and forecast. Just before it was time to go, he was so worked up over the switching winds he said, “no one will be able to hunt tonight, the winds just aren’t right.”
Now we have 40 bow stands so we ended up making our best educated guess and the hunter’s had a great evening. All the worrying was for nothing.
Matthew 6:27 asks the question… “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
Worry can do many things to our lives, but it can’t even add an hour to it. It can add, anxiety, depression, heart disease, lack of sleep, weight gain, weight loss, digestive problems and much more. But it can’t add time or anything of value. So why do we worry?
I know it’s easy for me, looking in from the outside, to say to you, “don’t worry about your life….” But our Lord says to just be mindful of only one thing… our relationship with Him. But our mind screams out, “That’s ridiculous, I must be concerned how I am going to live, and I must be concerned about what I am going to eat and drink.” Jesus says, no, you don’t have to. Be careful about thinking that He says this and doesn’t understand your circumstances. Jesus knows our circumstances better than we do, and He says we must not think about these things to the point where they become the primary concern of our day to day life.
Oswald Chambers said this about our worrying… “Whenever there are competing concerns in your life, be sure you always put your relationship to God first.”
One of the biggest things that worry does to a Christian is it robs them of their joy. A Christian without Joy has no real testimony. The world looks on that Christian and says, “why would I want that in my life.”
In John 10:10, Jesus said, “…I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
Do we really believe that? If we do, then why do we worry? The abundant Life is destroyed by worry.
I’ve used this old song by Evie before. It’s called “GIVE THEM ALL TO JESUS” and it says this…
Give them all to Jesus
Shattered dreams, wounded hearts, broken toys,
Give them all, give them all to Jesus
And he will turn your sorrow into joy
Give them all to Jesus…
