Isaiah 64:8 ~ “But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.”
Opening morning of turkey season… Micah and I are waiting on some gobblers that are roosting across the field. As I prepared my gear last night, after being stored away for the last 11 months, I noticed that the surface of my calls needed to be worked on. It wasn’t making a making good sounding calls, so I worked on it a while until it sounded like a real turkey. A second call needed some chalk on the lid, and I worked on that one as well. When I was done, I was amazed at how close these two calls sound to the real bird.
The slate call was made by my friend Shorty and the box was made by my friend Jerry. Both of these guys can take one or two pieces of wood and produce a call that sounds like the real thing. Jerry has an awesome eye for wood… he can look at the grain of a block of wood and tell you if it will sound like a turkey or not when he’s done with it. These guys can produce something from nearly nothing
You and I, in the hands of the Lord are like a piece of wood in Jerry’s hands. God can see exactly what we can become. If we allow Him, He will make something awesome from the clump of clay that we are.
Once He has gotten us where He wants us, he also takes us and puts us in the fire. As the refiner, He heats us up and removes the dross to purify us more and more.
God looks at you and I and sees something beautiful there. Something that we don’t even know that is there. If we allow Him, He will make something beautiful, He will make something awesome, something that is like God’s own Son. That should always be our goal, that when God looks at you and I, He sees His Son in us.
Elizabeth Elliot knew suffering and the fire of the refiner. Losing her first husband and four friends when they were speared to death in the mission field. Her second husband died just four years after they were married. She understands what it’s like to be shaped into exactly what her Lord wants of her…. She is quoted…
“Our vision is so limited we can hardly imagine a love that does not show itself in protection from suffering…. The love of God did not protect His own Son…. He will not necessarily protect us – not from anything it takes to make us like His Son. A lot of hammering and chiseling and purifying by fire will have to go into the process.”
If you are feeling as though God is bringing you through something rough right now… trust that He sees something in you that He is refining you into what He wants. Stand firm and know that what you are going through is for a better tomorrow and for His glory.
