Exodus 4:10-13 ~ 10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” 13 But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
Three years ago, I ran an archery elk camp in southern Colorado. I had two new elk guides and one of them was very nervous about guiding. He had hunted elk on his own plenty of times but had never actually been paid to guide. The closer we got to the start of the hunt the more nervous he got. With each comment about his lack of confidence, I did my best to reassure him, that I wouldn’t have hired him, if I didn’t feel he was able. Finally, just before hunters showed up, he said that he didn’t think he could do it. I told him I would put him in the very best place on the ranch and give him another guide to work with him if necessary. He finally agreed and did fine.
Throughout our lives we are called on to do certain things by other people. Sometimes we feel capable, sometimes we don’t. However, if God calls us to do something, He will ALWAYS make a way.
The first 17 verses of Exodus, Chapter 4 tell the account of God telling Moses what he should do… And Moses saying he can’t do it. God showed Moses two miracles that he could show the Egyptians if they wouldn’t listen, yet Moses didn’t trust God and God sent Aaron to speak for Moses. Moses could have done it without Aaron and who knows what blessings he missed out on be not trusting God to work through him.
When God calls us to do something believe that what He is calling you to do is possible, with Him. In Matthew 19:26 it comes right from the source… “Jesus looked at them intently and said, ‘Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”
Several years ago, I was helping some friends plan a rodeo, they had decided to have a Sunday Morning, Cowboy Church service and one of them asked if I could find them a speaker. I answered “Yes”. Then the friend’s wife asked, “why don’t you do it Dean”. Without thinking I answered, “Sure”. I had spoken several times prior to that but had never preached a sermon… I instantly doubted my decision to do the job. I kept telling myself that I couldn’t do it. But, giving it to God, I did it and He gave me the words and the confidence to get through… that was many, many sermons ago and I am so glad that I accepted the offer and I trusted that I could do it with His help. I know I’ve been extraordinarily blessed because of it.
Just think of the blessing Moses missed because he didn’t trust God to do it through him. Consider the blessing God has in store for us if we only follow His calling for our lives. If God is calling you to do something, know that He will provide what you need to do the job.
I challenge you to take five minutes and read Exodus 4:1-17 today. Then listen for His call.
When He calls, answer “HERE I AM LORD.”
