Activities:
Everyone is invited to join us for a half-day of fishing the coastal waters of Jacksonville, FL. We will meet at the Palms fish camp boat ramp the morning of May 9th. The local bait shop is called Browns Creek Fish Camp, which is on the right-hand side of the road as you drive in (they open at 6 so be there early so you’re not late to our am meetup!). We will launch boats to get on the water by 6:30 AM. Sunrise is at 6:36 AM and the low tide will be at 9:45. We plan to meet at the ramp at 11. After our time on the water, we will group up shortly where we will share stories and hear a short devotional from TBD before grabbing lunch at Palms Fish Camp.
We have generous volunteers providing the boats, so all you will need to bring is your own lucky fishing pole and gear. Tips will not be allowed but help with fuel expenses and ice is appreciated. You may want to consider bringing some snacks and drinks for yourself on the boat.
Prizes:
We will reward the most successful fishing team with some Blast & Cast towels.
Meals:
Please bring snacks and drinks to have on the boat. We will gather for lunch afterward at Palms Fish Camp, located next to the boat ramp.
Rules:
1. Please be on time and plan to stay until around 1:00 pm.
2. No perfect people allowed. Come as you are, no pretending.
3. Alcohol will not be allowed on boats, but will be allowed in moderation after the boat is on the trailer.
4. Please be mindful of your language when youth participants are around.
5. Have a good time.
6. Please be sure to keep track of your time and follow the Schedule of events below.
What to bring:
– Valid Florida saltwater fishing license
– Drinks and snacks for the boat.
– Parents – Please provide a life vest for all youth participants.
– Everyone should bring their own fishing tackle and gear for a morning of redfish, speckled trout, and flounder fishing. Please don’t expect volunteer boat owners to lend out their gear or tackle.
– If you want to keep fish, bring what is necessary to clean your own catch and take it home.
– Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
– Rain gear if necessary.
– A willing attitude that’s eager to help make it work and have a good time – remember, everyone there is a volunteer, so set your expectations as though you are going on a weekend trip with friends.
Suggested tackle:
We will target redfish, trout, and flounder in the shallow marsh of Jax Beach. Low tide is at 9:45 AM. This time of year, you can expect to find redfish in schools in the creeks and flounder in the creek mouths. Each fisherman should bring their own fishing rod and gear. Appropriate rods are medium to medium-heavy action, 6-7ft long, either spinning or bait-casting,15-20 lb line. We recommend putting fresh line on reels if you haven’t done so in the last few months.
