SUMMARY:Coastal TX | Youth Whitetail and Feral Hog Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Overview: The Coastal Texas Chapter of Blast & Cast will host a whitetail and feral hog hunt in Trinity County for boys aged 7-16 during the 2027 Texas hunting season.  Participants will be selected via an application process. The application deadline is September 15\, 2026. \nCLICK HERE TO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION \nPurpose: To build meaningful relationships with other outdoorsmen for the purpose of leading them to\, or back to\, Jesus Christ while simultaneously assisting landowners with whitetail and feral hog population reduction efforts. \nDates:  January 8-10\, 2027  (Please plan to be on site between noon and 1pm on Friday.) \nCost: Free.  This is a donor-supported event.  If you would like to help support the costs associated with the event\, please see the donations section below. \nLodging:  Lodging for the hunt is included.  Location and directions will be provided to hunt participants in advance of the hunt. \nMeals:  Meals for the hunt are included. \nGiveaways: Each youth hunter will receive an event t-shirt and a door prize. \nHunting: \nThe Trinity County hunt will take place on private land. Landowners and volunteers will be on hand to aid in transportation to and from hunting locations.  A Blast & Cast volunteer will sit with each father/child in the blind to help ensure that harvest goals and restrictions are met.  Participants will be allowed to harvest one whitetail doe and any feral hogs encountered. \nRequirements: \n\nYouth aged 7-17 are eligible\, and only youth may harvest game.  A male parent or legal guardian must attend with the youth hunter\, and both parent and youth must have a valid TPWD hunting license.\nScoped centerfire rifles only. .243 caliber minimum. No archery and no shotguns.\nAll youth hunters must successfully pass a range test prior to hunting. Each youth must be capable of consistently hitting a paper plate at 100 yards to participate.  Decision of the Range Boss to pass/fail is final.  Please sight in your rifle and have your youth hunter practice prior to the event.\nAll rules and regulations for Texas Parks & Wildlife apply. It is suggested that you read all county regulations and download the TPWD app (https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/app/) prior to the hunt.\nAll guns around camp must remain unloaded\, in a gun case\, and inside a locked vehicle at all times. No guns inside the lodge or camp area. During transport to and from hunting locations\, all guns must be kept unloaded with action open at all times. No guns should be loaded until the vehicle dropping off is out of sight.  Guns should be unloaded with action open at least ten minutes before arranged pick up times.\nHunters/parents are encouraged to mark where an animal was shot but may not leave sight of the blind.  A Blast & Cast volunteer will assist with wounded animal recovery.\nGutting your harvested animal at or near your hunting area will not be allowed. There will be designated areas to process game.\nHunters/parents must field dress and quarter their own animals.  Blast & Cast volunteers will be present to assist anyone that does not know how.\nNo consumption of alcoholic beverages allowed before or during hunting hours. Drinking in moderation will be allowed after hunting. Drunkenness will not be tolerated.\nBE YOURSELF; please do not be someone you are not.\n\nDonations:  Donations and sponsorships are tax deductible!  These hunts are free to all participants\, so all costs associated will be covered by donations. Participants must be at least 16 years old for this event\, and all participants under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nLodging: LePlatt Lodge on the San Juan \nRegistration: First registered first reserved! \nHunting:  We will hunt waterfowl on both public and private land on Friday and Saturday. \nThis is a buddy trip with friends\, not a guided trip. If you will not be able to check in by noon on Friday\, please let us know ahead of time. The event will officially end at 12:00 pm on Sunday\, January 31st. Everyone must check out by noon on Sunday. Volunteers must check in and be on site by 11:00 am on Friday. \nLodging: We will be staying at a private residence at Stormy Creek Ranch.  The address to the Ranch will be provided to participants prior to the event. \nLiability/Minors:  All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver at check in.  Participants must be at least 16 years old for this event\, and all participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Everyone must check out by 11:00 am on Sunday. \nLodging and Meals: We will be lodging and dining with the fabulous Horn\, Fin\, and Feather on the El Sauz Ranch located just outside of Port Mansfield.  Participants will enjoy breakfasts and dinners prepared by the onsite chef.  You can find more information about Horn\, Fin\, and Feather at Horn Fin Feather.  Participants should be prepared to pack lunches to bring on the boat for Friday and Saturday as most boats will stay out through the afternoon. \nFishing: We will be wading Port Mansfield for trophy speckled trout at this event\, with all day wades and lunch on the boat anticipated for both Friday and Saturday. \nAll participants should be ready and able to wade fish with artificial lures.  While our volunteers are always happy to give some instruction and assistance\, each participant is responsible for bringing their own fishing gear and tackle and should be largely self-sufficient on the water. \nAll fishing takes place via volunteers who are donating the use of their boat (and fuel) for the weekend. Lunchtime will be at each groups’ discretion at one of the restaurants on the water and usually depends on how the fishing goes. Afternoon fishing is also at the discretion of each group…either way you will be able to fish as much as you want. Saturday evening will be filled with hanging out at Camp Broadway’s 48 acres including the main cabin\, firepit\, and hiking trails. If they choose to do so\, please replace it\nCash for boat gas\, ice\, or any live bait you would like to use\nSunscreen\, hat\, and sunglasses (prepare for all weather conditions)\nBed roll/sleeping bag/blanket\, pillow\, towel\, toiletries\nOutdoor sitting chair\nFilet knife and ziploc bags – please plan to clean your own fish if you choose to retain any\nCooler to bring fish home\nA willing attitude and eagerness to help make it work and have a good time.  Remember\, everyone there is a volunteer\, so set your expectations as though you are going on a weekend trip with friends.\n\nSuggested tackle:  Plan to fish for crappie\, white bass\, hybrid stripers\, and largemouth bass. Some boats\, particularly those with kids\, may pursue catfish. Each fisherman should bring their own rod. It’s recommended to put fresh line on reels if you haven’t done so in the last few months. Best artificial lures for hybrids and white bass are jigging spoons and swim jigs. Best artificial lures for largemouth bass are spinnerbaits\, crankbaits\, and soft plastics. For catfish\, cut bait\, shrimp\, and stink baits can be used but will require terminal tackle such as barrel weights\, swivels\, and circle hooks.
