AK | 7-Day Alaskan Fishing Events

May 15, 2027 @ 8:00 am - August 28, 2027 @ 5:00 pm
Alaska Photo Rotated - Blast & Cast

In 2027, Blast & Cast is excited to host seven fishing-oriented events at The Rock lodge on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. in addition to set up and tear down teams.  Each event will include seven days of fishing and adventure, with participants arriving on a Saturday and leaving on a Saturday.  Additionally, we will host set-up and tear-down mission teams to help prepare for the summer events and winterize the lodge.

Want to know what a week in Alaska looks like?  Check out our promo video at Alaska Video.  We filmed this video in early August.  The footage is all original, no AI.

Due to overwhelming demand, we will utilize an application process to select participants for each event.  Selected participants will be notified via e-mail by December 15th.  To apply, please CLICK HERE.

Each selected applicant will be able to invite one friend or family member to join them on their Alaskan adventure.  Once selected, you’ll have 30 days to confirm and finalize registration and donations for you and the person you have invited.

Purpose: To point outdoorsmen to the cross by providing a bucket list experience in Alaska at a price that can fit any outdoorsman’s budget.

Event Host: Leigh Johannsen – leighjo@blastandcast.org

Cost: Our desire is to keep the event cost as close to actual cost as possible, but costs are highly variable due to unpredictable circumstances like weather, fuel cost, necessary repairs, local transportation, etc.  We would also like to provide scholarships for these events if needed.

The minimum suggested donation amount for this event is $900 per participant, including set-up and tear-down teams.  At the end of the year, we will forward a tax receipt that breaks down our actual event cost and the tax-deductible portion of your donation.  The tax-deductible portion will be used to help offset the cost of various ministry efforts in Alaska, including event scholarships, transportation and equipment, lodge repairs and projects, local mission efforts, and much more.  Selected participants are invited to donate as the Lord leads.

If selected, donations are non-refundable and will be accepted starting January 1st and due by January 31st.

What is Provided:

  • Pick up and drop off from the airport or ferry terminal on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska
  • On-island transportation during the event.
  • 7 nights lodging at The Rock lodge
  • All meals
  • 3 days fishing via boat with a Blast & Cast volunteer as weather allows
  • Saltwater fishing equipment and tackle for use on the boat
  • 3 days fishing inland lakes and streams as weather allows
  • Hiking, adventure, exploration opportunities during free time
  • Morning and evening devotions led by a Blast & Cast volunteer

What is Not Provided:

  • Travel to and from Prince of Wales Island, Alaska
  • Alaska non-resident fishing license and appropriate tags
  • Guides – this is NOT a guided trip and on-site staff are volunteers, not professionals
  • Freshwater fishing equipment and tackle for use on lakes and streams (tackle recommendations will be provided to each team)
  • Waders and rain gear

Travel: Participants will book their own travel arrangements and be responsible for any costs associated with travel to/from Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  Once teams are selected, a team leader will help coordinate group travel to ensure that you all arrive and depart Prince of Wales at close to the same time.  Book all flights early as they fill up.  Each group will be provided with on-island transportation once you arrive at the airport or ferry.

Age and Health Limitations: The minimum age for this event is 16 years old.  The event will be hosted in an extremely rural area with limited access to healthcare and emergency services, and participants will spend multiple days hiking into area streams and lakes to fish.  Participants should be in generally good health, able to climb stairs, and able to hike up to half a mile with fishing gear on uneven and slippery terrain.

Fishing: Teams should expect to spend three days of the event fishing via boat, primarily for halibut.  This is not a guided trip, and the boat will be operated by a Blast & Cast volunteer who is not being compensated for operating the boat.  Lingcod, rockfish, and salmon will also be targeted based on seasonal availability.  It’s Alaska, and the weather can be calm and mild or windy and rainy.  Participants who are vulnerable to getting seasick should bring medication.  Equipment and tackle for saltwater fishing will be provided.

The remainder of the event will be spent on local streams, rivers, and lakes fishing for inshore species.  Cutthroat trout, dolly varden, steelhead, and all of the salmon species are available seasonally.  A Blast & Cast volunteer will be available to give suggestions on locations, species, and tactics, and the group will be free to explore the island and enjoy a day of adventure and fishing.  We will have limited equipment and tackle available for freshwater fishing so participants should plan to bring their own or purchase it when you arrive.  Waders will be needed for most inland fishing activities.

There are also some optional non-fishing activities available on the island.  Hiking, kayaking, exploring forest roads, wildlife viewing, and more are all options for the group to consider.

Weather: Expect the weather to be both terrible and amazing at the same time.  Quality rain gear is essential as it will rain.  When the rain clears and the sun comes out, it is beyond beautiful.  In general, most teams can expect lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s, but late cold snaps do happen and there could be some days with lows in the 30s.  Plan for wet and cold and you’ll appreciate the warm and sunny days all the more.

Lodging and Meals: Meals and lodging at The Rock lodge and meals are provided.  Lodging is rustic but comfortable.  Participants will bunk in an upstairs loft on twin beds, and each participant will need to bring a sleeping bag or twin sheets/blanket.  The lodge operates on battery power and can support CPAP machines.  Heating comes from a wood burning stove on the lower level and nights can be slightly chilly.  Water is pumped out of a local stream and then filtered for drinking.  There is no running water, and bathroom facilities are very rustic (think outhouse and two showers over the course of the week in order to conserve water).

Daily Chores: This is not a guided trip, and any Blast & Cast staff members on site are there on a volunteer basis.  Participants at each event will be expected to operate as a team and pitch in to accomplish daily chores at The Rock lodge.  Those chores may include cooking, cleaning, water filtration, trash separation/burning, fish processing, vehicle/boat maintenance, and more.  This is an opportunity for a group of guys to team up and go on an adventure at a very affordable price.  Camp life will require some teamwork.  Don’t expect a full-service experience.

Cell Reception and Internet Service

There is no cell reception at the lodge or on most of the island where the event will take place.  Internet service will be available at the lodge twice daily for about an hour via satellite.

Rules:

  1. No perfect people allowed. Come as you are, no pretending. Whatever you’re dealing with at home, we have either been there or supported someone else who has.
  2. No drunkenness. Alcohol is permitted after all activities are done for the day, but drunkenness won’t be tolerated.
  3. Group gatherings for morning and/or evening devotions are mandatory. The time around the campfire having an open and honest discussion is why we host these events.
  4. Pitch in for camp chores and be flexible on daily activities. Camp life and working together with a team is part of the experience that makes Alaska special.
  5. Be ready to listen. If you need to hear from the Lord, 7 days in the wild of Alaska is a good place to escape the daily grind and hear Him speak.

What to Bring:

  • Quality rain gear
  • Breathable waders with boots that can handle slick terrain
  • Alaska fishing license and applicable stamps
  • Freshwater fishing gear and tackle
  • Lightweight sleeping bag or twin sheets/blanket (pillow is not needed)
  • Non-cotton clothing that dries easily
  • Personal medications and toiletries/towel
  • Personal drinks and snacks (can be purchased on island)
